Akele Coffey

Akele Coffey is a senior at American University with a major in Spanish and Communication Media, and a minor in Anthropology. She became a member of Zeta Phi Beta in Fall 2008. She currently serves as the President of the Sigma Pi Chapter. Akele is an active member of the AU community, serving as the Treasurer of the AU Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and a photographer for the Talon Yearbook. She has also served the DC community by tutoring after-school programs for youth and participating in issue-awareness walks. She was a teaching assistant for an introductory photography course and an intern at the Senate Office of Barack Obama. Akele strives to contribute her tenacity and organizational skills to all of her activities.

Some of Akele’s accomplishments include the 2006 Chicago Public Schools Essay contest winner, the 2007 PUSH Excel Scholarship recipient and the 2010 Bowden Photography Scholarship recipient. She has also been honored as the 2008 Talon Yearbook Sports Photographer of the Year, the 2009 American University Greek Spirit Award recipient and the 2010 American University Student Activities Excellence in Leadership Award recipient. In her free time, Akele enjoys filmmaking, photography, swimming and soccer. Akele hopes to one day transform her passion for photography and cultural studies into a career in media.

Angie Lewis

Hailing from Prince George’s County, Maryland, Angie Lewis is a junior at American University majoring in Broadcast Journalism, holding a 3.4 GPA. She became a member of Zeta Phi Beta in Spring 2009. Angie currently serves as the Vice President and Treasurer of the Sigma Pi Chapter.

Angie has recently worked at Crystal Palace FC, a professional soccer team in Baltimore, as a communications intern. Her duties included completing post game press releases and articles, interviewing the team’s players and coaches, and contributing to online radio broadcasts of games. Angie also does online broadcasting for American University, covering the university’s fall sports.

In the future, Angie hopes to continue on the same path to become a sports personality in a major media market. Aside from sports, her other hobbies include playing the bass guitar and acoustic guitar, drawing, and writing.

Valli Sanmugalingam

Valli is a junior at American University with a major in International Studies. Valli became a member of Zeta Phi Beta in Spring 2010. She currently serves as the Secretary and Public Relations Secretary of the Sigma Pi Chapter.
